Recreate Chart from Picture

Please kindly note this guide is for Microsoft Office 2003 only. For Microsoft Office 2007 user you must first create the chart in version 2003 and use "editing existing" feature while formatting the chart in Microsoft Office 2007.

Convert a chart from picture could be a quick task since in most cases we can recreate the chart easily by using data labels on the picture. But what if no labels are available? By using the following method, we can convert a picture into editable column or line graph object without estimation while keeping it accurate. Let’s get started:

Right click on the picture in PowerPoint, select “Save as Picture” and save it as any image file

Fill in category labels in Excel with dummy data

Highlight data and select “Chart Wizard” to create a column chart

Make sure the “Plot Area” background color is set to none

Double click on “Chart Area”

Within “Patterns” tab select “Fill in Effects” on lower right

Go to “Picture” tab then click on “Select Picture”, and import the Jpeg image we just created

As you can see the picture is now become background of the column chart

Adjust category and value axis, make them align with axises of the picture.

If necessary, crop the picture in PowerPoint and export again until it fits perfectly

Fix scale in value axis, data range must be the same as the picture

Click on individual column and point your mouse to the top of it until a double-arrow icon appear,
drag the mouse to adjust value and makes it match with the picture
